Job description, responsibilities and duties

Functions

As a Material Science / Mechanical Engineer in the Forming & Welding Section, after a period of familiarisation and self/supported learning, you will:


Master and develop vacuum brazing, diffusion bonding and heat treatment technologies for fabrication of high-precision prototypes and components of accelerators and experimental facilities.

Provide reference support in the design, fabrication and materials selection associated with these technologies.

Take an active role in multidisciplinary projects, maintaining close collaboration and co-operation with the other Mechanical Engineering facilities CERN-wide.

Organise and lead the work of a small team of technicians specialised in the application of these technologies.

Contribute directly to practical work, estimate production schedules and costs, maintain and develop facilities, use and improve documentation.

Establish a network and maintain contacts with specialised laboratories / firms worldwide.

At a later stage, further develop expertise in other technologies such as electron beam welding, laser welding etc.

Personality requirements and skills

Qualification required

Master's Degree or Ph.D. in the field of material science, mechanical engineering, or equivalent.

The experience required for this post is:


Demonstrated experience in manufacturing, fabrication technology and processes of high-precision mechanical components, preferably with vacuum brazing technologies, high-vacuum systems operation and for particle accelerator applications.

A solid scientific understanding as well as hands-on direct, practical experience are required.


The technical competencies required for this post are:


Knowledge of metallic materials properties: in-depth knowledge of material science in particular in solid state physics, surface chemistry, surface thermodynamics and kinetics, materials selection and characterization.

Knowledge of ceramic materials properties.

3D and 2D technical drawing: read/interpret technical drawings and ISO tolerancing (dimensional and geometrical product specification standards), preferably capable of drafting technical drawings.
