We’re looking for a passionate, skilled and ambitious Senior UI Designer to join our Design System team.
As a Senior UI Designer at the UK’s largest supermarket, you’ll be working on a complex, sophisticated design system that supports and works hand in hand with our product design teams. You’ll discover new opportunities, creating intuitive and effective solutions that improve every stage of our user’s design workflow from Figma to engineering handover. You’ll weigh business goals with our colleagues’ expectations, creating component and Figma library solutions that exceed both. And you’ll know how to fail fast, get back up, and try again.
Audiences don't get bigger or more diverse than this. So, you’ll really need to know your onions. That includes a big appetite for the latest design and engineering technology, AI, prototyping and testing, and data and analytics. Collaboration mixed with expertise and insight is the recipe for successful design. So, you’ll be working with some of the finest UX and UI designers, researchers, UX writers, service designers, data and analytics experts, product managers and developers.
Our Digital Design System is central to our design vision at Tesco. So, you’ll need true expertise designing one, from components to how designers use them, contribution processes, engineering handover and collaboration – you are an expert at this.

About the role
As a Senior System Designer at Tesco, you will:
- Build, maintain and evolve flexible, reusable components for our platform libraries that are suitable for both designers to use in Figma and that are technically feasible for our engineers.
- Collaborate with your team members to design and maintain our platform libraries using variants, tokens, and other organizing and scaling principles.
- Implement and maintain processes for scaling, updating, managing various parts of a design system including researching and testing its effectiveness.
- Work hand in hand with the product teams to bring the design system to life inside all UI projects and help evolve our Digital Design System based on user needs.
- Work with product teams to identify opportunities for simplifying designs across products across the different business areas to keep our design system lean and efficient.
- Deliver valuable, high-quality, and consistent work without sacrificing speed.
- Help plan tasks against team objectives, strategic drivers, and key projects.
- Create and maintain end user documentation describing the standards and best practices of our component library as a reference for UI & UX designers, product owners, researchers, and developers.
- Create and maintain engineering handover documentation.
- Deeply understand design to development handover and can support other teams in this area.
- Be the voice of the Digital Design System (DDS) for designers in other teams, helping them use the system to produce brilliant work.
- Use Figma and Engineering analytics to help inform your work.
- Promote inclusive design practices and deliver accessible (AA)designs and components.
- Own all end-to-end UI process activities including interaction design discovery, identifying trends, and critically analysing their viability, sketching, wire-framing, prototyping and delivering ready for build design files.
- Collaborate with different disciplines: You will work closely with UX designers, researchers, UX writers, engineers, product managers, data analysts, and business stakeholders to explore, build and deliver designs.
- Champion human-centred design inside and outside of your team.
- Work within and across agile squads to design, develop and improve the user experience of the design system across our supported platforms.
- Partner with UX researchers to help your team develop empathy for our users, including those with a disability, and advocate for their needs, validating designs via A/B testing, unmoderated, usability testing, etc.
- Work closely with engineering teams to understand feasibility of design ideas and ensure review of design implementation at key stages of the development cycle.
- Facilitate workshops, run appropriate conceptualisation and participatory design sessions.
- Help other disciplines understand the value design can bring to a project to build the best products.
- Continuously seek to improve design processes inside and outside of your team to gain efficiency, remove obstacles, and simplify workflows.
- Provide feedback to other designers to help strengthen your team and Tesco as a whole.
- Help your teammates build expertise, strong decision-making skills, and empathy for our users.
- Embrace opportunities to line manage other designers and help with their learning and development.
- Work with the Design Manager to cultivate a positive, supportive, and inclusive team culture.
About you

You must be proactive, creative, flexible, resilient and able to handle high levels of complexity and ambiguity. You will champion our design system and invent and simplify a set of mechanisms, building blocks and tools that empower designers and engineers building the future experiences for our colleagues and customers. Our design & engineering community are at the heart of the DDS. You will also need:
- 5+ years UI design experience.
- A positive, constructive can-do attitude. You are self-driven, independent and motivated.
- You are a system designer/thinker, you live by organisation and structure and efficiency.
- A strong and demonstrable ability to simplify the complex.
- You bring a systematic, scalable design approach to your work, considering how best to deliver component libraries, layouts, templates, and icons that scale across numerous platforms and products.
- Demonstrable significant experience designing and working on design systems for large organisations.
- A passion for the latest design, AI, and engineering technology
- You excel at bridging the gap between design and engineering.
- A strong, well-curated portfolio demonstrating your expertise in design systems.
- The highest level of proficiency with the latest versions of Figma, specifically Figma focused on their library features.
- Expertise in designing with accessibility in mind and meeting WCAG 2.1 level AA for component and product design.
- Ability to constructively critique design.
- The ability to work independently as well as collaboratively.
- A solid understanding of existing design systems such as Material design, and Fluent Design & an obsession with digital trends and design
- Experience collaborating closely with multiple disciplines, including product and engineering.
- Demonstrable ability to coach, mentor and set standards for ways of working for product designers using the design system across UXDR.
- Proactively share and communicate design expertise and knowledge with your peers and teams.
- Strong written and verbal English communication skills, and the ability to present to all levels of seniority and subject area experts within the organisation.
- A good understanding of the end-to-end iterative design double diamond process.
- Self-motivated and good organisational and time-management skills
- Proficiency with current industry design and collaboration tools such Miro etc.
- Exceptional visual & interaction design sensibility
- Exceptional attention to detail, and a passion for building quality products
- A good knowledge of the latest design and prototyping tools and technologies.
- Passion for solving problems while balancing all facets of a user experience.
- Above all, you are passionate and love what you do.
It’s an advantage if you also have:
- Some engineering background is a strong plus.
- Previous experience in the retail sector.
- Strong experience in high-profile design projects in a customer-facing commercial environment.
The job requires to be based in/close to Prague, we work in hybrid mode.
