ABOUT THE ROLE
As a System Engineer in our HR Engineering stream, you will tackle complex topics in support and development within the People/HR domain. Collaborating closely with your team, you will deliver detailed solutions that meet business needs. Your role involves contributing to valuable features, participating in retrospectives, suggesting process improvements, and always working on the highest priority items. You will identify and question requirements, ensuring a streamlined and efficient workflow.
Joining our CE People Technology team, you will work with Group Technology partners to define the technology roadmap for the CE People area. As part of a DevOps team, you will deliver and maintain technology solutions, including both third-party and in-house developed products, across application layers and infrastructure.
This role is based in Prague, Czechia. We currently operate on a hybrid model, meeting in our office three days a week.
WHAT WOULD YOU DO?
As a System Engineer in HR area you:
- Follow our Business Code of Conduct and always act with integrity and due diligence.
- Provide technical support to business users for internally led applications and potentially participate in an on-call ROTA.
- Offer functional support for externally managed applications.
- Investigate and analyze incidents reported by business or monitoring tools.
- Coordinate tasks and activities between business users and technical teams or vendors.
- Participate in Technology projects as a guide in impacted applications to ensure a smooth handover to support.
- Work on small development projects (bash, PowerShell, etc.) and problem resolution within your area.
- Build and run servers using Tesco’s virtualization platform.
- Assist developers and vendors in setting up environments based on requirements.
- Handle vulnerability remediation, regular OS patching, and penetration testing.
- Support the deployment of new application features and fixes.
- Continuously improve support processes and methods, enhancing team application knowledge.
- Understand and follow Tesco technology standards, identifying weaknesses and participating in gap resolution.
PREREQUISITES FOR THE ROLE
- Demonstrated ability in an engineering role with technical and security standards knowledge, and hands-on infrastructure and OS experience.
REQUIRED SKILLS
- Strong hands-on technology background.
- Knowledge of infrastructure (servers, storage, network, OS, databases).
- Essential understanding of operating system principles (Linux & Windows).
- User-level experience with Linux/Unix/Windows command prompts.
- Familiarity with modern application design concepts.
- Ability to write simple functional scripts in programming languages like bash or PowerShell.
- Experience building queries for relational databases such as Oracle, Microsoft SQL, or PostgreSQL.
- Understanding of data flow principles between applications and their dependencies.
- Basic awareness of Service Management principles, particularly incident and problem management.
- Good interpersonal skills with end-users and technical teams globally.
- Flexibility and independence in work.
- Analytical thinking and a continuous learning approach.
- Self-reliance, responsibility, and flexibility.
- Proficiency in Czech/Slovak and English.
- Willingness to travel occasionally across Europe.
ADVANTAGE WOULD BE:
- Awareness of retail technology and HR systems.
- Experience with Docker and Kubernetes (or similar).
- Experience working in an international environment.
- IT helpdesk and customer support experience.
- Basic understanding of agile methodology, DevOps principles, and project lifecycle.
- Familiarity with integration and delivery standards.
