Instrument Technician (M/F)

Duties

As part of the Neutron Optics Service (SON), you will join the Monochromators Group and its 6-person team in charge of the production of mosaic crystals for the ILL’s neutron monochromators. Your duties will include in particular the following:

  • Ensuring the maintenance and proper functioning of a diffractometer dedicated to the characterisation of single crystals using neutron diffraction
  • Characterising mosaic crystals depending on demand
  • Aligning crystals and mounting them on the mechanical assembly of the monochromators
  • Maintaining the Institute’s monochromators and contributing to the development and design of innovative mechanical systems.
Qualifications and experience
  • NVQ Level 4, BTEC HND (or equivalent) in a technical field (such as optical engineering, instrumentation, materials engineering or mechanical engineering).
  • Good mechanical background and sound knowledge of conventional machining
  • Proficiency in the use of SolidWorks.
Personal skills
  • You have good manual skills and are capable of designing and producing simple mechanical assemblies.
  • You are able to use your ingenuity and creativity to satisfy the unique and constantly evolving needs of our scientists.
Language skills

As an international research centre, we are particularly keen to ensure that we also attract applicants from outside France. You must have a sound knowledge of English and be willing to learn French (a language course will be paid for by the ILL). Knowledge of German would be an advantage.
